Abraham is called the father of our faith and the Bible describes him as a friend of God. God called him and prepared him to bring His redemptive purposes to His creation. God’s call on Abraham’s life is written in the book of Genesis 12:3 “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (NIV)
Through this promise, God brought a people and a nation to fulfil His purposes on this earth. Israel was formed and called to be a light to its people and the nations. This call was completed through the life and ministry of Jesus Christ on this earth. Now, the believers and the followers of Jesus are called to carry that same promise given to Abraham through their lives and ministry to the peoples of the world. This is the Abrahamic Blessing. The Abrahamic Blessing is part of the fundamental DNA of a Christian. The apostle Paul states this so clearly in the book of Galatians 3:6-9;
“So also Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.” So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.”
“If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” (NIV)
These scriptures should define the primary purpose of the life of believer. This should be the outworking of our faith and our ministry - that The Lord will bless us and through us many people and many nations will be blessed. Hence, with all that the Lord has taught us and given us, we channel those blessings to the marginalised, the poor and the afflicted people of the nations of this world. In Christ Jesus, every believer is a seed of Abraham, an Isaac for God, a child of blessing to be blessed, so that through them people and nations can be blessed.
